Program Pankh aims to empower children in villages with wings of knowledge, and transform them into agents of change within their immediate realities of village and community life. Pankh Classes, conceived to address a variety of concerns, are classes guided by Educators appointed by Samvedna in each of our project villages.
For our children to be able to imagine a reality that is not characterized by experiences of marginalization, it is imperative that they are removed from their prevailing environment and be placed in a setting that is replete with possibilities and opportunities. To achieve this, we bring children to Bhopal and get them enrolled in schools and government-run hostels. These hostels not only give children the much-required distance from their villages, but also provide them with an atmosphere where they can concentrate on their studies.
An extension of our programmes Pankh and Udaan, Lakshya aims at making Bedia children who pursue higher education self-reliant. Samvedna believes that it is only through education and an alternative source of livelihood that this vicious cycle of caste-based prostitution can be broken. Samvedna facilitates their access to professional courses, such as Law, Nursing, Fashion Designing, ITI, Teaching, etc.
Eureka is an anthology of ideas, and an eclectic mix of tools to convey those ideas to children. Devised as a non-formal education (NFE) platform, Eureka aims to create awareness among children about their social context, and empower them to approach their immediate reality from rights-perspective. With an aim to increase retention in primary schools, the program introduces elements of NFE in the very formal setting of formal education – a school.
Sports for Change had started as an extension of Pankh classes but soon enough evolved an identity of its own. Within Pankh, one day of the week is set aside for team sports and games. Village youth play a variety of games like volleyball, cricket, football, badminton, etc. This helps in increasing interaction among the youth, who otherwise don’t engage with each other, ultimately leading to strong youth groups, making Samvedna’s presence and work more sustainable in our project-villages.
With Hip-Hip Hooray we take our children residing in Bhopal on a fun-filled journey towards a better version of themselves. The program has a dual aim of increasing the retention of our children in city schools and hostels, and also giving them exposure to the city.
Machaan, a residential theatre workshop, along with providing a platform to the children to talk about their lives, also equips Samvedna’s educators with unique tools to interact with children. The workshop facilitates peer-interaction among the children, which eventually leads to a stronger children’s group in the villages. This in-turn prepares a strong foundation for Samvedna’s cause in the villages.
Jatan celebrates courage and the fruit it bears. The program aims to empower Bedia women who are in caste-based sex work or have now quit the profession by providing them with a means to earn their livelihood and lead a dignified life. With Jatan, we aim to impart the skill of sewing and cultivate an entrepreneurial competence among the woman.
